The PhD Finance Scholarships project involves writing a dissertation on the following topic: ‘Human Rights and Human Duties: Assessing the Obligations entailed in Human Rights’.

The Finance Scholarships research questions are:

a. What is the exact relation between human rights and human duties? Are all rights claimable and enforceable? Who has the obligation to protect universal goods?
b. What do human duties require in terms of content? Do they require an obligation to avoid deprivation, to protect from deprivation or to aid the deprived, as Shue suggests?
c. Who are the specific claimants of human duties (to whom are human duties owed), to individuals only or to groups as well, as according to the ‘Responsibility to Protect’?
d. Who are the primary bearers of human duties: individuals, governments or any collective body? Further, on the basis of which reasoning can duties be attributed?

The Finance Scholarships research aims at the following objectives:
1. Analysing the conceptual link between human rights and human duties.
2. Developing a normative theory of human duties.
3. Proposing practical guidelines for the assessment of the legal implications of human duties.

This project will look at the following issues:How firms from rising powers may be disrupting the current paradigm of global competition and are thus changing the ‘rules of the game’ (Zeng and Williamson 2007).

Rising power firms are increasingly becoming global players, taking on more substantive roles in global production networks or becoming lead firms in their own right (Schmitz 2004). Which factors facilitate this development, how can firms upgrade their position.Furthermore, rising power firms often address ‘bottom of the pyramid’ markets or engage in entrepreneurial innovation that is unprecedented and alleviates social problems (London, Anupindi, and Sheth 2010). This project seeks to identify drivers and outcomes of this economic development process.

ValueThe three-year, full-time award covers tuition fees and a tax-free annual stipend of approximately £13,000 per year.

The successful candidate will play an important role in a consortium project RCUK - reducing energy consumption in buildings by optimizing use of wireless information transfer characteristics (Wi-being) systems. This is a multi-disciplinary study on the use of information technology and wireless communications in order to reduce the demand for energy in the built environment.

This is achieved by tracking in real time, the energy consumption of individual energy products entities and persons, the behavior of energy consumers with specific information communicated on measures to reduce waste of energy.

The project aims at the optimal interface comments to identify the format and timetable for the submission of data from sensors to individual users of energy to achieve the best effect on stimulating immediate and lasting behavioral change. The work is both exciting and challenging, in a multidisciplinary research team with an international reputation for energy and buildings research and in collaboration with partners in the consortium of De Montfort University and Queen Mary, University of made London and a number of innovative industry partners .

Candidates must hold a PhD (or equivalent), preferably in the fields of energy and buildings, ICT or environmental psychology/psychology or related disciplines. Self-motivation is a key requirement and candidates must be able to work independently but have the inter-personal skills to interface with the larger research team.

The full-time studentship, which includes an element for teaching will be for 3 years, subject to satisfactory progress. Starting bursary will be £20,000 pa plus student fees.

Business models of economic activity have traditionally divided organisations into those whose purpose is profit and those whose purpose is other than profit. Over the past two decades, in the U.K. and internationally, there has been a blurring of these boundaries with the development of new models of organisations acting for profit and for purpose. These new hybrid organisations pose questions for the accounting and governance frameworks that have been established to accommodate the traditional models. These questions are both practical and theoretical.

Practical questions could include - How can organisations account both for purpose and profit effectively? How can they reconcile the open tendencies of shared purposes between several organisations with the closed tendencies of separate legal and financial identities? Are there lessons for the more traditional models from some of the practices now developing in these hybrid organisations?

Theoretical questions could include - Are the hybrid networks demonstrating shared purpose and values replacing the idea of corporate social responsibility with something culturally much deeper? Is the idea of civic responsibility as central to the purpose of the commercial company an approach at odds with the current methods of regulating markets? If so, what are the implications for current accounting and governance frameworks?

Description of the vacant position
We seek a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual with a good academic record and collaborative ability to work on a project dealing with the effects of plantfungi interactions in the Arctic. The interactions between plants and fungi are strongly understudied in the Arctic. Besides low temperature, lack of available nutrients is one of the strongest limiting factors in the Arctic. Mycorrhizal symbiosis increases plants availability to nutrients and may potentially be very important for plants success in arctic environments. The candidate will explore how different mycorrhizal assemblages affect plant population genetics and structure. In particular, we are interested in the possible connection between increased nutrient availability provided by mycorrhiza, and the effect on plants sexual investment. The project will involve fieldwork, field and greenhouse experiments, various molecular techniques such as microsatellite analyses, and DNA sequencing, including high throughput sequencing methods. The project will be developed in cooperation with Microbial Evolution Research Group, University of Oslo.

Qualifications
The appointed candidate must have a Master degree or equivalent in biology or biotechnology. A strong academic record with a weigthed average grade of master’s or equivalent education with a grade of B or
higher is required. Good skills in English language, both oral and written are important. Documented experience in the use of general laboratory techniques and molecular methods are preferred. Emphasis will also be placed on experience from field work, data analysis and statistics.

Admission to the doctoral program at one of the Norwegian mainland universities is a condition of employment in the position as PhD student. The final plan for researcher education must be approved and a contract signed with the mainland University at the latest six months after commencement. The application will be prepared by the candidate and the supervisors.

Employment Conditions for the Ph.D position
The employment contract is of 4 years and includes mandatory duties like teaching responsibilities of 25%.
The appointed candidate must live in Longyearbyen during the employment period. He/she is expected to contribute actively to ongoing scientific activities in the department. It is also expected that the Ph.D. student take an active part in the advancement of his/her field of research, and he/she must also be willing to contribute to the development of UNIS in a more general sense.

All salaries are set in accordance with the Norwegian government's University salary scale. Ph.D students starts at salary step 48, which currently is a gross salary of NOK 383 700. As a resident in Svalbard an
annual allowance of NOK 26 400. (Svalbardtillegg) will be added to the salary. A Social Security contribution of 2 per cent, to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, will be deducted from the salary. Income tax onSvalbard is 8 per cent, plus 7.8 per cent toward National Insurance coverage.

Vienna International Post-Doctoral Training in Molecular Life Sciences (VIPS) at the Max F. Perutz Laboratories (MFPL), Austria

The VIPS Post-doctoral training is a pioneer programme with special support from the Austrian government and the City of Vienna. The mission of this programme is to offer an excellent environment to post-doctoral scientists and to support them on their way to scientific independence.

VIPS offers new international PostDocs a 3 to 5 year long post-doctoral training at the MFPL with the specific aim of preparing them for a career as principal investigators. To increase the chances for success and the establishment of their own research groups, the VIPS PostDocs will be encouraged to develop their own research topics and apply for independent grants in the second half of their training. During the final phase of their training, VIPS PostDocs will be supported as they apply for group leader positions outside the MFPL.

VIPS calls will be announced biannually and candidates selected through a competitive procedure. Successful applicants will be affiliated with one or two of the eligible research groups at the MFPL. Post-docs will also choose an independent postdoctoral mentor from the faculty that will provide additional advice and career support. The VIPS programme actively supports scientists who wish to combine family life with a successful career.

Water is vital to maintaining biodiversity and supporting the quality of life. In Europe, directives such as the European Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) and the Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC) require government agencies to minimise the deleterious effects of water resource utilisation and other pressures on freshwaters. For many key freshwater organisms, however, the information needed to support such government action is limited. In addition, success to minimise environmental impact depends upon general public support, both directly through adjustment of behaviour (e.g., pollution containment, water conservation) and indirectly through financial investment. The sophistication of habitat management strategies is often limited by our inability to predict the public support required for their effective implementation. Given that habitat stresses will likely increase due to climate-driven environmental change, the need for effectivemanagement strategies for sustaining or even improving Britain’s diverse river habitat is all the greater.
This PhD will examine the potential impacts of climate change on one of the most iconic and sensitive of all freshwater organisms, the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera L.). In an inter-disciplinary study focussed on the rivers of Wales, the work will assess potential climatic effects on pearl mussels, and appraise public perception of the management strategies that may be required for improving their habitat quality. Pearl mussels were once widespread in clean, stony rivers in Britain, but have since been driven to near extinction due to sediment pollution, eutrophication, and over-harvesting. The species has been classified as a priority by the UK Biodiversity Steering Group, and a national Species Action Plan has been prepared to encourage measures for its survival. To support these efforts, the PhD will:
1. Establish a numerical model capable of predicting rates and patterns of catchment erosion in response to different climate change scenarios.
2. Develop predictions of sediment loading into Welsh rivers and the consequent for pearl mussels and their habitats based on the findings of (1).
3. Canvas various communities across Wales and determine public perceptions of climate-change risks, values associated with river habitats, and prevalence of relevant ecosystem/resource use practices (e.g., water conservation, tourism).
4. Combine the geographically distributed data sets from (2) and (3) to determine where habitat requirements and public perception are most positively/negatively aligned.
5. Assist policy-makers in Wales in utilising the findings of (4) to determine appropriate courses of action in managing habitat and public engagement.

Artemisinin is a herb used to treat Malaria. Currently there are no exact extraction procedures and many people use different conditions to obtain the active material. As a result the process has not been optimised and the quality and yields of the extracts vary tremendously. For artemisinin to be an effective treatment for malaria it must be produced in in reasonable amounts of high quality, and for this process to be effective it must be optimised.

This project involves the examination of the extraction of artemisia and quantification of the yields produced. Extraction using conventional extraction techniques will be compared to enhanced extraction using ultrasound. The quality of the extracts will be monitored after the extraction process and the process will be optimised in terms of extraction solvent, temperature, extraction time and ultrasonic frequency employed.
Candidate specification

The ideal candidate will have BSc Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology or Biological Sciences (minimum 2:1) with a laboratory based final year project. Some experience of working with natural products and extraction.

FOR Peace Awards

The Martin Luther King Jr. Award was established by FOR in 1979 to recognize unheralded persons or groups working in the United States in the tradition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King was very involved with FOR, and was serving as a member of the Advisory Council at the time of his death. The award honors those who make a significant contribution to the furtherance of Dr. King’s nonviolent approach to transforming racial, economic, and social injustice.

The International Pfeffer Peace Prize was established in 1989 by Leo and Freda Pfeffer to particularly honor those around the world working for peace and justice. Leo Pfeffer was the United States’ leading theoretician on religious liberty and the separation of Church and State, and he argued these constitutional issues before the Supreme Court. A long-time FOR member, Leo was a founding member of the Jewish Peace Fellowship. He died in 1993, but his legacy continues to contribute to a more peaceful society.

"It is something to get excited about a presidential candidate. And another thing for a responsible citizen," said Jennifer Donahue, political director of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics. They and other political observers think that they are not its own right.

Professors and students also noticed the silence in the universities, which are a fertile ground for "Obama-mania" during the election campaign.

Erin Carroll, 19, sophomore at La Salle University in Philadelphia, blame the lack of commitment to their attention in the short term generation. You want change - currently, she says - and I've received.

"I feel like all journeys with their mobile phones and their laptops. We feel we have all at once. That's what we're used to," says Carroll. "We are the" me-me-me "generation. "

Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Studentship Opportunities 2010-11

In 2009, Sussex was awarded a substantial number of doctoral and research preparation masters studentships for the following five years within an AHRC Block Grant Partnership award. Sussex was graded 'excellent' in terms of its postgraduate supervision and training.

Developing the research potential and impact of postgraduate students is integral to the University's vision of research at Sussex. Postgraduate students will also find dedicated support for their research and career development through Sussex's Doctoral School.

The Doctoral School is coordinating the AHRC studentships and now welcomes applications from suitably qualified candidates for a range of Masters and Doctoral programmes for the academic year 2010-11.

Eligibility

Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals, and EU students who can satisfy UK residency requirements. To be eligible for the full award, EU Nationals must have been in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the course for which they are seeking funding, including for the purposes of full-time education.

EU Nationals who do not meet the above residency requirement are eligible for a fees-only award, provided that they have been ordinarily resident in the EU for at least 3 years prior to the start of their proposed programme of study.

Applicants must have gained an undergraduate degree from a recognised university, or be a current undergraduate expecting to graduate before 31 July 2010. Those applying for a doctoral award should normally have, or be studying for a Master's degree. Please note that if successful you may be required to produce evidence of your qualifications at registration.

Application process

All candidates for an AHRC award/nomination at Sussex must do the following:

Apply for a postgraduate place for the specific programme via the standard Sussex application method. This application must be made before the AHRC studentship deadline. Candidates submitting to the Sussex application process who have not already applied for a postgraduate place at the University will be deemed ineligible.
Complete an additional AHRC application form [DOC] and submit this to the Doctoral School. The same form can be used for both a Doctoral and a Research Preparation Masters award. This application form covers all the information required for Sussex to make a nomination under our BGP award.

The AHRC application form must be submitted to the Doctoral School via email or in hard copy, with AHRC BGP application clearly written in the subject line or on the envelope, by: 1200, Friday 5th March 2010

Applicants are advised that two references must accompany the application. These may be the same references you submit with your University Application if you wish.

However, competition for both Doctoral and Research Preparation Masters awards is fierce. Assessment panels in Academic Schools will be looking for a detailed appraisal of the applicant's academic development and suitability for the proposed subject and not a general statement of support.

You are therefore strongly encouraged to send a copy of your AHRC application form together with this Guidance for Referees sheet [DOC] for your referees to consider.

It is in the interests of applicants to consider the need for references as soon as possible to allow referees sufficient time to write a considered statement on your preparedness for masters or doctoral study.

Selection Process

Applications will be short-listed by panels in the relevant Schools, then checked by a Doctoral School AHRC BGP panel set up by the University which will then finalise nominations to be submitted to the AHRC.

Shortlisting panels and the BGP Committee will operate in accordance with the AHRC's Guide to Student Recruitment and Nomination. Panels will follow all relevant selection procedures and guidelines with regard to equal opportunities and will give equal consideration to full and part time, UK and EU, and prospective and continuing applicants.

You will be informed by the Director of Doctoral Studies in the Academic School to which you applied by the end of April whether (a) you will be nominated to the AHRC for an award (b) your name has been put on a reserve list, or (c) you have not been selected for nomination for an AHRC award.

Those applicants who are selected as nominated candidates will formally be required to confirm their acceptance of an award. Nominated candidates will be required to enter their details on 'Je-S'(web based portal used by the research councils) in April/May. Instructions on how will be sent out to those selected for nomination. The nominations will then be submitted to the AHRC in May 2010 for approval.

The AHRC will write to all the candidates who have been nominated for an award informing them whether or not they have been endorsed. It is anticipated that the vast majority of nominations will be endorsed.
